Wedding Rings for Men - An Engaging Issue

Picture of wedding rings for men

Men are more open to wearing jewellery traditionally worn by women – earrings, chains and now, even engagement rings. But for the majority of men, the only jewellery they wear is wedding rings.

Wedding rings, for men, is often the only acceptable item of jewellery they wear. It’s not surprising then that when it comes to choosing wedding rings for men, couples want to choose something strong, solid and simple – a piece of jewellery that will be timeless and masculine. But all that could change. As well as wedding rings for men, one high street jewellery chain has tried to launch a new trend: engagement rings for men.

Wedding Rings and Engagement Rings for Men

The idea of the male engagement ring hasn’t yet taken off, and it’s hard to predict if it will. In fact, some cynics say it is just a marketing ploy by the jewellery industry. Wedding rings for men have long been a tradition – the rings denote to the world that this man is taken. And wedding rings for men are an expression of commitment and love. Wedding rings on men also suggest a certain amount of maturity, stability and success. But what would an engagement ring suggest? Surely diamonds are a girl’s best friend, not a man’s? Doesn’t an engagement ring for a man imply a certain vanity and femininity that only the likes of David Beckham could get away with?

With this ring…

Supporters of the trend say it’s all about equality. Of course wedding rings for men are a crucial part of the wedding ceremony. Engagement rings on women were a way to tell the world a woman was no longer ‘on the market’ so to speak. It wasn’t seen to be necessary for a man to make the same kind of symbolic gesture by wearing a ring. But the idea of male engagement rings was more than that; more women want to have the option to propose to their men. Male engagement rings, complete with a diamond, may be a little too feminine for some British men, although they are worn in some parts of Spain and Scandinavia. The argument is issues of equality are driving the addition of an engagement ring as well as wedding rings for men.

Wedding Rings for Men

When it comes to wedding rings for men, the etiquette is straightforward – they wear them on the ring finger of their left hands. But the rules for engagement rings are a little baffling – men are supposed to wear them on their left ring finger until the wedding. The engagement ring is then moved to the right ring finger so the wedding band is the sole ring on the left ring finger. But whether the trend will take off remains to be seen. When it comes to jewellery, most men still only feel comfortable with one item – their wedding ring.
